Hospice Consultations
Making the decision to say goodbye is never an easy one. Palliative care has thankfully come a long way with our veterinary patients. Both house call and virtual appointments are available to provide an assessment of your pet, current medications, and discuss options to keep your pet as comfortable as long as possible. Virtual appointments are conducted by phone or video chat and are intended to provide additional insight and general information, without an in-person examination, medications and treatment plans cannot be prescribed and diagnoses cannot be provided. Please note: due to the nature of a house call practice, we do have limitations in diagnostics available. This service is in no way intended to replace your relationship with your primary care veterinarian, rather to compliment it. House call consultation and exam: $150 Virtual Consultation (New pet): $75 Virtual Consultation (existing patient): $40 Follow-up appointments: starting at $75 Additional diagnostics and medications may be recommended at the time of your exam. Many pets can benefit from injectable medications, depending on on-hand inventory, a follow up appointment or referral to your brick and mortar To allow for complete assessment, please have your full medical record e-mailed or faxed to Dr. Alex at least 24 hours prior to your appointment. Please see the Forms and Information tab for a questionnaire designed to help Dr. Alex make the most out of the appointment time for you and your pet.

Aggressive Animal Consultations and Euthanasia
Fear and aggression in our pets is a very nuanced issue. The safety of everyone involved and the minimizing stress for your pet are of the utmost importance to us at Hearthside Hospice. If your pet has a history of anxious or aggressive behavior, we will make a plan as a team. This may include a brief consultation prior to the appointment in order to prescribe appropriate calming medications, the use of a muzzle or alternative restraint techniques, and/or bringing a technician at the time of your appointment. There may be additional fees associated with these appointments. Important notices: -Dr. Alex reserves the right to decline proceeding with the euthanasia at any time through the process. -Bite-hold policies: it is a legal requirement that any animal who passes away for any reason within 10 days of biting a human must be submitted for rabies testing. Any bites acquired (by the family or HH staff) during the consultation will be reported to the appropriate regulatory bodies. -Euthanasia during rabies quarantine is only available within Burlington City limits and in coordination with Animal Control and as this requires submission for rabies testing and is only available in conjunction with cremation services. There is an additional $250 charge for this process. Potential additional fees: Pre-visit consult for medications only (15 min appointment): $75 plus the cost of the medication protocol prescribed. Additional staffing charge (applied if a veterinary nurse is required for handling): $150.

Extended appointment times
The euthanasia process is NEVER something we want to rush, however we also want to ensure we are not arriving late to the following appointments. The planned time for each visit is 45 minutes, but we are more than happy to accommodate an extended appointment if you would like to thoroughly discuss your pet's case or options, if you have a large number of family who would like to be present, or any other reason you would like to schedule additional time. Extended appointment times are billed at $50 per 30 min increment, please let us know at the time of scheduling if this is a service you would like to add.

Exotic Pet Euthanasia
Our exotic pets deserve a dignified ending just as our traditional pet species do. Hearthside Hospice is here to ease the passing of the majority of exotic species, please contact us to ensure availability. Please note: because of their metabolism, reptilian patients can take much longer than our veterinary species and require a 24 hour post-mortem monitoring period. Dr. Alex will talk you through this in detail. Due to the nature of a mobile practice, we are unable to utilize gas anesthetics as they would often be utilized in exotic animal euthanasia. Euthansia services for large and food animal services are not available at this time.

Emergency Services
Hearthside Hospice is not a replacement for maintaining a good relationship with your primary care veterinarian. All visits are on an appointment-only basis and emergency care is not provided. If your pet is experiencing a medical emergency, please contact your primary care provider immediately. If your pet is experiencing continued decline and is stable but you would like to pursue day-of euthanasia, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. We cannot guarantee availability, but are frequently able to accommodate scheduling at a short turn around.

Postmortem Transport
Should your pet pass away at home, Hearthside Hospice is available for transportation for cremation. Transport services starting at $50. See Cremation and Service Area sections for additional details.
